It’s a common phenomenon that the real-life incidents inspire writers to pen breathtaking stories which might eventually take the form of TV shows. It’s believed that TV shows get inspiration from what actually happens but it is a relatively rare phenomenon that reel-life sets example for real-life. The same has happened very recently and the credit goes to The Wire, the very popular HBO Network series. Hey… you, the ones who loved The Wire, must be proud of your darling TV show.

Okay, not making you more curious let me tell you the details. So, the news is that, in a recent operation the SCOTS cops implemented the same techniques as were used by the professionals in The Wire to successfully arrest more than sixty drug dealers. The information which was garnered during the Operation Focus paved the way to five days of dawn raids. The raids took place in Whitburn, Livingston, Blackburn, Fauldhouse and Armadale etc.

It’s being said that it’s the only operation of its kind, the biggest one till date which was put through by Lothian and Borders Police. Following the very successful techniques, similar to those used by Baltimore detectives in The Wire, drug deals were filmed and incriminatory conversations were recorded by the surveillance officers and all that helped them to apprehend the accused. Who can forget the modus operandi which was implemented in The Wire? Those people used to take help of hidden cameras and wire-tap etc to get the criminals into the trap.

The raids not only helped the cops to arrest 63 drug dealers, but they also found heroin, cocaine, cannabis, amphetamines, diazepam and methadone etc and thousands of Pounds in cash during the raids. The police have not revealed the exact amounts of the recovered items.

Well, I hope the buddies who loved ‘The Wire’ TV show will never forget the name of Dominic West. He portrayed detective Jimmy McNulty in the series and was very much liked by the viewers throughout its run, yeah, of course by gals. His portrayal of Jimmy McNulty made him a household name and people even recognize him as Jimmy more than Dominic. What a splendid success!

Dominic as Jimmy on ‘The Wire’ was a borderline alcoholic policeman with an American Irish accent which was utterly convincing. He appeared as a tough guy on series, but actually, he’s a firm buddy who has a cut-glass English accent. Yesterday, I read his interview given to some website and I came to know about his personal details. He was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and attended Trinity College in Dublin. One of my best friends is also studying in the same college.

I really liked him playing Jimmy and he was the only one because of whom I watched ‘The Wire’. It was great to see him investigating the mysteries and solving problems like alimony, alcoholism, child support, relationships and money. I also liked his intentions when he joined the department after a year of college in order to support his pregnant girlfriend Elena. He joined as a patrolman and was later promoted to detective.

Next, he’ll be seen in Channel 4’s English Civil War Drama ‘The Devils’ Whore’. He’ll portray Oliver Cromwell, a man who’s responsible for overthrowing the monarchy and turning England into a Republican Commonwealth in 17th century. He’s very crazy and excited about his upcoming project. Well, me too… I am desperately waiting to see him portraying Oliver Cromwell.

I can’t believe, I just can’t believe this man! You know the show The Wire which had got cancelled after its third season but kept garnering good reviews and came back to screen once again for its fourth season. The Wire has won TCA Heritage Award. The critics have hailed it as the all time great classic and the greatest drama ever made on television.

Hats off to David Simon for creating such magnificently impressive drama series. The series is definitely close to the hearts of every common man of States. We all see such irregularities and injustices in our routine life on the part of government institutions as well as the private ones, but common man is unable to bring about a change. The similar thing is depicted in the show. I like such realistic shows but I was not expecting it to win any awards. It mostly deals with the underbelly of our society and not many are willing to accept the truth as it depicts it.

I don’t know about others but I am a huge fan of this show from the very beginning. I liked the theme of the show, portraying, urban life and its troubles, artistic ambitions and zeal to achieve something new. It is different as it deeply explores the sociological structures and norms of America. Actually this is based on the experiences and understanding of show creator David Simon, as he faced many similar dilemmas while he was working as a police reporter. His portrayal is authentic and his characters right out of the streets.

The show came to an end after fifth season, but I still think that it should have continued

Anyways, I am still enjoying this show as I watch its episodes from previous seasons. I am keenly interested in political and social dramas and it satisfies my hunger for a socially relevant series. But hey! Sixty episodes are not enough for me and I want more.

Does anybody remember ‘The Wire‘, the show which came to an end recently in the month of March? I think many of you remember the show as it ran for complete six years on HBO. The most crowded serial in American television and which never saw any commercial success and didn’t win any of the notorious awards.

The show has been announced the all time favorite of critics. I didn’t believe when I heard this from one of my colleagues. She told me that the drama won this title because of its realistic approach and closeness to the real life scenario instead of creating a fictitious story line. Whatever we have watched on the show happens to us in real life.

This is basically a crime drama, and proves the notion that everybody has a boss to obey to, doesn’t matter how powerful you are, you have to make compromise at some point, whether it’s a don, a drug trader, politician or a common man.

Coming back to the point I must inform you that the show has bagged three nominations in Television Critics Association Awards for 2008. It has been nominated as ‘Program of the year’, ‘Outstanding Achievement in Drama’. And the show creator, head writer and the executive producer of the show David Simon has been nominated for the category for ‘Individual achievement in drama’.

Off course he deserves this, in my opinion. He has the sound background in journalism and has written a book named ‘Homicide-a year on the streets killings’ and has taken most of his characters in the series from this book. Congratulation David! Keep the good work up. Give us more of such series.

The Wire, a show set in Baltimore centers around the city’s drug scene

It chronicles the saga of multigenerational family business dealing with illegal drugs, and the efforts of the police force to demolish it. Detective James McNulty has been assigned to lead a joint homicide and narcotics team. The purpose of the team is to bring down drug bigwig Avon Barksdale along with his right hand man Stringer Bell, Wee-Bey, his own nephew D’Angelo Barksdale. Lt. Cedric Daniels, the supervisor, deals with his own problems including Corruption.

The show depicts the lives of every part of the drug “food chain”, from junkies to dealers and from cops to politicians.
