I can’t believe, I just can’t believe this man! You know the show The Wire which had got cancelled after its third season but kept garnering good reviews and came back to screen once again for its fourth season. The Wire has won TCA Heritage Award. The critics have hailed it as the all time great classic and the greatest drama ever made on television.

Hats off to David Simon for creating such magnificently impressive drama series. The series is definitely close to the hearts of every common man of States. We all see such irregularities and injustices in our routine life on the part of government institutions as well as the private ones, but common man is unable to bring about a change. The similar thing is depicted in the show. I like such realistic shows but I was not expecting it to win any awards. It mostly deals with the underbelly of our society and not many are willing to accept the truth as it depicts it.

I don’t know about others but I am a huge fan of this show from the very beginning. I liked the theme of the show, portraying, urban life and its troubles, artistic ambitions and zeal to achieve something new. It is different as it deeply explores the sociological structures and norms of America. Actually this is based on the experiences and understanding of show creator David Simon, as he faced many similar dilemmas while he was working as a police reporter. His portrayal is authentic and his characters right out of the streets.

The show came to an end after fifth season, but I still think that it should have continued

Anyways, I am still enjoying this show as I watch its episodes from previous seasons. I am keenly interested in political and social dramas and it satisfies my hunger for a socially relevant series. But hey! Sixty episodes are not enough for me and I want more.

Does anybody remember ‘The Wire‘, the show which came to an end recently in the month of March? I think many of you remember the show as it ran for complete six years on HBO. The most crowded serial in American television and which never saw any commercial success and didn’t win any of the notorious awards.

The show has been announced the all time favorite of critics. I didn’t believe when I heard this from one of my colleagues. She told me that the drama won this title because of its realistic approach and closeness to the real life scenario instead of creating a fictitious story line. Whatever we have watched on the show happens to us in real life.

This is basically a crime drama, and proves the notion that everybody has a boss to obey to, doesn’t matter how powerful you are, you have to make compromise at some point, whether it’s a don, a drug trader, politician or a common man.

Coming back to the point I must inform you that the show has bagged three nominations in Television Critics Association Awards for 2008. It has been nominated as ‘Program of the year’, ‘Outstanding Achievement in Drama’. And the show creator, head writer and the executive producer of the show David Simon has been nominated for the category for ‘Individual achievement in drama’.

Off course he deserves this, in my opinion. He has the sound background in journalism and has written a book named ‘Homicide-a year on the streets killings’ and has taken most of his characters in the series from this book. Congratulation David! Keep the good work up. Give us more of such series.

The Wire, a show set in Baltimore centers around the city’s drug scene

It chronicles the saga of multigenerational family business dealing with illegal drugs, and the efforts of the police force to demolish it. Detective James McNulty has been assigned to lead a joint homicide and narcotics team. The purpose of the team is to bring down drug bigwig Avon Barksdale along with his right hand man Stringer Bell, Wee-Bey, his own nephew D’Angelo Barksdale. Lt. Cedric Daniels, the supervisor, deals with his own problems including Corruption.

The show depicts the lives of every part of the drug “food chain”, from junkies to dealers and from cops to politicians.
