The Wire as a Social Commentary

I have been wondering lately about our eternal fascination with underworld. The movies and TV shows that offer even a glimpse into this unknown world become a hit. How come something which is considered a scourge by the common man in real life, proves to be so engrossing when it comes to fantasy world? Whether it is The Sopranos or The Wire, the tale of underworld mafia never fail to catch the fancy of the populace in a big way.

Realism is a factor that contributed greatly in the success of The Wire. Since the aim was to create truthful characters, most of the minor characters were played by the non-professional actors. The series today stands apart as it showed “faces and voices of the real city” it depicted. Usage of contemporary slang made viewing of The Wire immensely immersive.

In December 2006, The Washington Post carried an article wherein local African-American students confessed that The Wire TV Show had “hit a nerve” with the black community, and that they themselves knew real-life counterparts of many of the characters. The article also regretted the toll drugs and violent behavior was taking on the black community.

Simon, the creator of the show described season 2 as-”meditation on the death of work and the betrayal of the American working class….”

Simon opines that season 3 “reflects on the nature of reform and reformers, and whether there is any possibility that political processes, long calcified, can mitigate against the forces currently arrayed against individuals.”

The season 3 can also be seen as an allegory that draws unequivocal comparison between the War in Iraq and the national drug prohibition. Portrayed by Major Colvin, imparting his views to Carver, Simon made his point that as policing has been allowed to develop into a war, so drug prohibition will never succeed achieving its aims.

The season 4 of The Wire TV Show looks at schools as a porous entity of the society that is affected by problems outside their borders. Education comes not only from schools rather children can be educated by several other ways, including contact with the drug dealers they work for.

‘The Wire’ heads to BBC 2 with complete five seasons

Baltimore based American tv show ‘The Wire’, ran on HBO Network for five consecutive seasons and received fabulous success during its run. It went off air on March 9, 2008, just a few months ago with the series finale ‘-30-‘. As of now, series has been picked up by BBC 2 to air all the 60 episodes of the series, giving an option to celebrate to its fans. The complete show would be rerun and the ones who were missing ‘The Wire’ after its cancellation can pick up their favorite show once again.

Since its launch in 2002, ‘The Wire’, the dark police drama, has been one of the most acclaimed and most accepted HBO TV dramas. US TV fans welcomed ‘The Wire’ with open arms and the same is expected from the UK TV fans. No airing schedules, such as day and time etc, are confirmed yet! Sue Deeks, BBC’s head of series, programme acquisition, said “We are delighted to offer terrestrial viewers the opportunity to watch this ground-breaking series. It’s a wonderful chance for everyone to see what the critics have been raving about for so long”. Its’ gonna be the first time ever when ‘The Wire’ would be picked up by a terrestrial TV.

The plot of series is set in Baltimore and it centers on a group of police officers. It’s worldwide known for focusing on social issues such as poverty, gangs, drugs, corruption rather than just showing the typical police station environment. The next priority is given to gangsters, drug addicts and corrupt politicians and journalists etc. Leading the star cast is Dominic West, portraying Det. James “Jimmy” McNulty. Helping him are Sonja John and Lance Reddick appearing as Det. Shakima “Kima” Greggs and Lt. Cedric Daniels respectively.

It’s gonna be pretty interesting to watch all episodes of ‘The Wire’ once again. It’s more thrilling to watch TV shows on TV, but what during this time period. Hey, download season 5 and in fact, all seasons of The Wire, until it returns on BBC 2.

The Wire revisits Peterson

Wire can safely be described as a modern classic in the history of television. It has run five successful seasons and though each season touches separate aspect of society yet it remains joined to the main premise. Wire was widely appreciated for its realistic depiction of crime, drugs and the struggle of police to keep these gangs off the streets in Baltimore. The series and the actors portraying various characters have been critically acclaimed and much loved by the people. Now its demons have come back to haunt the actor Felecia Peterson who played a killer in The Wire.

She was arrested in Baltimore on drug charges. How stranger can it get for her folks? Police wanted her in the murder trial of Steven Lashley. Police claims that Pearson is a witness of the brawl that ended in Steven Lashley stabbing three men, one of them later died. So when police went to her home to get her for not cooperating with them they discovered two cigars allegedly filled with marijuana. Lucky for her that she has just been charged with one count of drug possession. Things could have been worse.

The wire episodes

Last June The Wire won four nominations including Program of the year, and the annual Heritage Award which is granted to a show who has positive impact on society. All five seasons of Wire dealt with different sociological themes yet they were woven together so deftly that they appeared to be part of a larger whole. The fifth and final season of The Wire ended this year.

The Wire comes to an end

The Wire is not one of the very popular TV shows in TV history. It comes under good rated and series finale of this good rated series was also good rated. Okay, don’t you think what do I mean by good-rated (it’s my way to evaluate any episode). Good rated means 8 out of 10. Well rated means 9 out of 10 and best rated means yeah 10 out 10 and sometimes 11 out of 10, but very rarely. Ha ha

Let’s back to our main point from where we started. On this episode, Carcetti reacts to a damaging report presented by Pearlman and Daniels. Their choices are either to clean up or hide the dirt. McNulty asks Landsman to pull police off the hopeless case as he wants to put the case to an end.
Las Vegas

Haynes finds little support for his concerns about reporters work from the bosses. Dukie is looking for an old mentor to take a loan. A cat and mouse game is going on between Levy and Pearlman. So, this was the story on series finale. Now, tell me was not it a depressing end? No, it was not. In fact, series finale ended just as it was planned for and I am satisfied with the way series finished. My pick from this finale episode:-

Bunk: How are you not in jail!
McNulty: I don’t know. The lies so big people can’t live with it I guess.

The wire, really an extraordinary series and the characters, plots and themes and everything was so strong and hard hitting. It’s impossible not to be shaken out of the complacency of living in the best society after watching this show.
