The Wire as a Social Commentary

I have been wondering lately about our eternal fascination with underworld. The movies and TV shows that offer even a glimpse into this unknown world become a hit. How come something which is considered a scourge by the common man in real life, proves to be so engrossing when it comes to fantasy world? Whether it is The Sopranos or The Wire, the tale of underworld mafia never fail to catch the fancy of the populace in a big way.

Realism is a factor that contributed greatly in the success of The Wire. Since the aim was to create truthful characters, most of the minor characters were played by the non-professional actors. The series today stands apart as it showed “faces and voices of the real city” it depicted. Usage of contemporary slang made viewing of The Wire immensely immersive.

In December 2006, The Washington Post carried an article wherein local African-American students confessed that The Wire TV Show had “hit a nerve” with the black community, and that they themselves knew real-life counterparts of many of the characters. The article also regretted the toll drugs and violent behavior was taking on the black community.

Simon, the creator of the show described season 2 as-”meditation on the death of work and the betrayal of the American working class….”

Simon opines that season 3 “reflects on the nature of reform and reformers, and whether there is any possibility that political processes, long calcified, can mitigate against the forces currently arrayed against individuals.”

The season 3 can also be seen as an allegory that draws unequivocal comparison between the War in Iraq and the national drug prohibition. Portrayed by Major Colvin, imparting his views to Carver, Simon made his point that as policing has been allowed to develop into a war, so drug prohibition will never succeed achieving its aims.

The season 4 of The Wire TV Show looks at schools as a porous entity of the society that is affected by problems outside their borders. Education comes not only from schools rather children can be educated by several other ways, including contact with the drug dealers they work for.

Dont Panic would host The Wire Quiz- what itd be all about?

Let me first tell you what Don’t Panic is all about. It’s an Experimental Marketing Agency. The agency is hosting a quiz based on the popular HBO Network series ‘The Wire. It all is being done to raise funds for anti gang culture charity, Tom’s Trust. Well, I guess your next question would be -what Tom’s Trust is? It’s a charitable trust which aims to deal with and put off the causes of gang culture and street based crimes etc. Their ways to do so include educational programmes and other charitable means.

And, much to fans’ surprise, someone from The Wire is approached by the event managers to make an appearance. Any guesses who he/she would be? I know, all of you would utter the name of your favorite stars of the show.    Well, I am sorry to say but only the dreams of Dominic West’s fans would come true. Yeah, you’ve got the right nerve. It’s Dominic West who would make an appearance at the event scheduled to be held on 30 June 2009 at the popular event space Shoreditch House.

The idea to arrange such an event came to the mind of Joe Wade, director of ‘Don’t Panic’. It seems that the reason behind so is that the drama addressed some issues in line with the targets of Tom’s Trust. Let me also tell you that all the proceeds will go to Tom’s Trust and Don’t Panic is arranging the event just on a pro bono basis. You can go to the comment section if have anything on your mind to share with The Wire fans.

It has been more than one year since The Wire went off air. The last, season 5, only had 10 episodes and it came to an end on March 9, 2008 with the series finale entitled ‘-30-‘. All fans are missing the show and are looking towards the show creators to know if they have any further plans.

Now you can watch online and download The Wire episodes here. You just need to join the website and doing so would give you an access to not only The Wire but hundreds of popular American, Canadian and British TV shows available in our data base.

‘The Wire’ fame and my fave Dominic West

Well, I hope the buddies who loved ‘The Wire’ TV show will never forget the name of Dominic West. He portrayed detective Jimmy McNulty in the series and was very much liked by the viewers throughout its run, yeah, of course by gals. His portrayal of Jimmy McNulty made him a household name and people even recognize him as Jimmy more than Dominic. What a splendid success!

Dominic as Jimmy on ‘The Wire’ was a borderline alcoholic policeman with an American Irish accent which was utterly convincing. He appeared as a tough guy on series, but actually, he’s a firm buddy who has a cut-glass English accent. Yesterday, I read his interview given to some website and I came to know about his personal details. He was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and attended Trinity College in Dublin. One of my best friends is also studying in the same college.

I really liked him playing Jimmy and he was the only one because of whom I watched ‘The Wire’. It was great to see him investigating the mysteries and solving problems like alimony, alcoholism, child support, relationships and money. I also liked his intentions when he joined the department after a year of college in order to support his pregnant girlfriend Elena. He joined as a patrolman and was later promoted to detective.

Next, he’ll be seen in Channel 4’s English Civil War Drama ‘The Devils’ Whore’. He’ll portray Oliver Cromwell, a man who’s responsible for overthrowing the monarchy and turning England into a Republican Commonwealth in 17th century. He’s very crazy and excited about his upcoming project. Well, me too… I am desperately waiting to see him portraying Oliver Cromwell.
