Aidan Carcetti was born on 24 April 1968 in the sub-urban region of Drumcondra, Dublin, Ireland. His late father was an architect and his mother is a nurse. He is the brother of Fionnuala Murphy, an actress. He has adopted his mother’s surname Gillen. He studied at St. Vincent’s C.B.S., Glasnevin.
He joined the Dublin Youth Theatre in his teens. He appeared in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ as “Bottom” at the Projects Art Centre, when he was sixteen years old. Then he moved to London. He has appeared in a British television series, ‘Queer as Folk’ and in its sequel ‘Queer as Folk 2′. This was perhaps one of the best-recognized roles, he has done in UK. He has earned much fame as “Tommy Carcetti” in America, which is his character’s name in the American television series ‘The Wire’.
He performed in the Broadway’s ‘The Caretaker’ and earned the nomination for the Tony Award-2003 for this role. He performed in the Dublin Gate Theatre’s production of ‘American Buffalo’, and was nominated for Irish Times Theatre Award for his role in it.
He was nominated in the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor for ‘Queer as Folk’ in 2000. He has won the Best British Newcomer Award - 2000 for ‘The Low Down’ at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. In 2009, he became the winner of the Irish Film and Television Awards in the category of the Best Actor in a Lead Role in Television for ‘The Wire‘.

Aidan Gillen is playing the role of the Mayor of Baltimore named “Thomas ‘Tommy’ Carcetti” in ‘The Wire’ tv show. He was the city councilman of Baltimore and chairman of the council subcommittee for public safety and it seems that he took inspiration from the former mayor of Baltimore and the current Governor of Maryland - Martin O’Malley, to rise to the position of Mayor. He is also a husband and a father in addition to being a politician, but he sometimes has been unfaithful to his wife. At the end of season five, he succeeded in his political intrigues, and won the election as governor of Maryland. He gave Narese Campbell the position of mayor and promoted Rawls as the superintendent of Maryland state police and Stanislaus Valchek to the position of interim commissioner of the Baltimore police department, as per their previous agreement.
